Slilanthi Abayagunawardana is one of the most senior textile designers in the country and the soul of URBAN ISLAND’s textile focused work. With over thirty years’ experience in textile, Shilanthi studied design at the Ontario College of Arts in Canada and was awarded the university’s Textile Design Award in 1983. In recognition of her exceptional work in textile design, she was also offered Lily Maley Scholarship and Banff Arts Centre Scholarship. After returning to Sri Lanka, Shilanthi shared her expertise in textile design with universities and pioneering fabric studios in the island such as Barefoot and Jewel Knits. Her style is a deliberately refined, understated chic that grows in richness as you observe the piece closely.

Shilanthi’s work for URBAN ISLAND continues this exquisitely refined look with surreal colour combinations that reminds one of the incredible beauty of Earth and her elements.

Shilanthi’s SS17 collection for URBAN ISLAND brings together gorgeous compositions with stunning colour palettes and speaks to the woman with a refined eye who believes that understated is the only statement worthy of making.
